Dr. Dabber Boost EVO
I admit it… I’m a tech geek. If there’s a shiny new device out there, I want to try it — especially in the cannabis space. In an emerging industry, everyone is racing to build a better mousetrap, which means that the market is being inundated with new consumption technology.
When I worked in mobile technology, I would joke that I enjoyed the industry because it worked well with my lack of focus. The technology was evolving and adapting quickly; new tech became outdated just months after it was released. I never had the opportunity to get bored because the technology changed so fast; my job was never the same for more than a few months at a time.
The same can be said for the cannabis industry. Between technology and science, research and development, compliance, and legislation — nothing stays the same for long in cannabis. There are plenty of tech manufacturers out there that are jockeying for position in a highly competitive atmosphere.
Dr. Dabber is one such company that has emerged in the last several years to improve the cannabis consumption experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to try their newest, portable e-rig — The Boost EVO.
Super Simple Design
One of the most significant benefits of the new Boost EVO is its simplicity. Comprised of only four pieces, the base, the atomizer, an adapter ring, and the glass piece, so there’s not much that can go wrong.
The base is sturdy, heavy-duty, and just the right shape and size to comfortably fit in any hand, male or female. With only one control button, the functionality is incredibly simple but more robust than you’d think. Plus, the ambient lights provide a fun, social conversation starter. With five different settings, you can set the right ambiance for every occasion.
The quartz atomizer design is impressive, too. A simple magnetic connector ensures the atomizer drops into place without a fuss. The bucket is large enough to hold up to a half gram or more of concentrates; however, unless you’re in a social setting, I wouldn’t recommend using more than you intend to consume in a single session as the heating process will kill any flavors.
The glass piece connects to the rig with a surprisingly strong, quick connect, magnetic adapter. This simple ring provides a silicone seal for the glass piece to sit in and the airflow control button. The button allows the consumer to completely block airflow for bigger vapor clouds or allow more airflow for cooler inhalation. Pressing the button allows full airflow to clear out the chamber.
Heavy-Hitting Little Dabber
So, size is deceptive — because, despite its small form-factor, the Boost EVO packs a potent punch. The six different temperature settings start with a low temp of 500°F and cycles up to 750°F in 50° increments. At 500 degrees, even the lowest setting provides a pretty significant dab. Additionally, the device holds the desired temperature for 20 seconds in a typical session, which allows for 2–3 puffs on from a single session — perfect for sharing with your spouse.
If you’re in a social setting, you can change the length of time the Boost EVO holds the temperature. Changing it to ‘Party Mode’ the e-rig will hold the programmed temperature for 40 seconds, allowing plenty of time to pass it between friends. (Naturally — you’ll want to use a little extra oil if you’re sharing it.)
Finally, to hit and hold these high temperatures, the battery must be powerful. Not only that, but this battery is estimated to work for up to 60 sessions on a single charge. The Superman of batteries!
Cleaning is a Breeze!
Maybe one of the biggest headaches of electronic cannabis devices is cleaning and maintenance. Coils burn out, get gunked-up, and need regular attention. With the Boost EVO, I was impressed with how easy the unit was to clean. Because the quartz atomizer is so simple, it only takes a cotton swab after each use to keep it dab-ready. However, Dr. Dabber suggests replacing the atomizer every 4–12 months, so plan on an additional $50 part replacement regularly. The glass piece cleans like any other glass piece — a little isopropyl alcohol, and it’s as good as new.
Wait — I didn’t mention the case!
The Boost EVO comes packaged in a unique carrying case made of high-grade, automotive Styrofoam that is virtually indestructible. So, if you’re a traveling dabber and need a device that travels well, then I recommend taking a look at the Boost EVO.
A Few Drawbacks
Despite being a super cool little device, here are a few things I would’ve changed:
1. The Temperature Settings: I prefer lower temp dabs, so I would prefer the range of temperatures to come down a little — like 400 to 650 or so. Hot dabs can be painful and hard on your lungs and esophagus.
2. The Glass Design: There’s nothing in place to prevent spills from the glass piece, so be cautious when removing the adapter to reload the device. (I had this thing for a week and spilled it at least three times!)
3. The Glass Shape: Although the glass piece allows for a little water filtration and cooling, the length of the glass piece is very short, so the vapor doesn’t have much time to cool down before it hits your lips/lungs. If it were just a bit longer, it might improve the smoothness of the hit.
4. The Cost: The Boost EVO starts at $329 from To the Cloud Vapor, which is a little on the high-end. Factor in the $50 atomizer replacements, and this device is an investment.
My Final Word
If you have the money to spend, this is an excellent battery-operated, portable e-rig. I think it’s a little more directed towards the recreational user with the higher temps and flashing party lights, but overall the device felt like the high-end, quality device it’s supposed to be.
The higher temps typically mean a more potent, more sedative, couch-locking effect, but for seasoned cannabis consumers, this is often the goal.
